California Residents Monitor
Earthquakes With WeatherBank's Online Weather Service
EDMOND, Okla., October 31, 2000—Residents of California and other states are now able to monitor earthquake activity from their home or office with WeatherBank’s online weather service.
WeatherBank recently developed new interactive graphic maps that indicate the location, magnitude and depth of earthquakes in any state or region of the U.S., said Steven Root, president and chief executive officer.
Once
an hour, WeatherBank gathers earthquake information from the U.S. Geological
Survey, Root said. The location of each earthquake is then plotted on
proprietary maps and color-coded according to magnitude, he said.
Those
maps are then made available to subscribers of WeatherBank’s online service as
static or animated images of earthquakes from the present day through 45 days
ago, Root said. JavaScript programming allows the user to see basic details of
each earthquake by pointing his mouse over the location of the earthquake. If
the user clicks on the location of the earthquake, complete details are
displayed in a separate browser window.
“We
designed this product to make it easy for professionals and hobbyists to observe
trends and monitor earthquake activity,” Root said.
Residents
can access WeatherBank’s earthquake maps, radar images and local weather
forecasts by subscribing to WeatherBank’s online weather service at http://www.weatherbank.com.
The
monthly subscription fee is $14.95 for 24-hour access to thousands of weather
products, including hurricane tracking maps and exclusive, severe weather
watch/warning maps, Root said.
Examples
of WeatherBank’s earthquake maps are available for free at http://www.weatherbank.com/examples.html.
